Dental implants are a way of replacing missing teeth. Dental implants are mounted onto posts which are inserted into the jaw during surgery.

Implants are particularly useful when removable dentures canít be used. They improve the appearance and keep the denture stable. Implants are not visible from the outside and people would not be able to see that the teeth are supported by implants.

For having an implant, the patient needs to have healthy gums and enough jawbone to take the posts and support the replacement tooth.

The bone in the jaw where the tooth is missing is exposed. Then a hole is drilled and a metal post is inserted into the bone.

The replacement teeth are then mounted onto the implant. The replacement teeth might be single or in a group or also as a bridge attached to neighbouring natural teeth.

The entire procedure is usually done under a local anaesthetic.
